Why schools need it

Environmental asthma triggers commonly found in school buildings include cockroaches and other pests, mold resulting from excess moisture, and dander brought in from animals at home or in the classroom.

Moisture problems in school buildings can be caused by roof and plumbing leaks, condensation, and excess humidity. Some of these problems have been linked to changes in building construction practices over recent decades, which have resulted in more tightly sealed buildings that may not allow moisture to escape easily. Moisture problems in schools are also associated with delayed or insufficient maintenance due to budget constraints, and temporary structures such as trailers and portable classrooms have frequently been associated with moisture and mold problems.

In 2014, the National Center for Education Statistics surveyed a sample of school districts and estimated that the average age of the nation’s main school buildings was 55 years, putting the average construction date at 1959. The same survey found that nearly one-fourth of the nation’s schools have one or more buildings in need of extensive repair or replacement, and nearly half have reported problems related to indoor air quality.

The health and comfort of students and teachers contribute to learning and productivity in the classroom. Failure to respond promptly and effectively to poor indoor air quality in schools can lead to increased health problems, costly repairs, potential liability, and a greater risk that a school will need to close and temporarily relocate staff and students.

During the COVID outbreak, the State of South Carolina turned to Bactronix for help, and awarded Bactronix the state contract for COVID disinfecting.
